“Many people may have a wrong image of me. Against the expectations, I do not shout to players and I am not the same kind of tough guy as a coach as I was as a player. Instead, I want measured data to support my decision making and I am guiding players individually towards healthier lifestyle”.

A successful player career brought authority for coaching

It is a pleasure to listen to the coaching philosophy of a former top ice hockey player. Authority and know-how accumulated during a long career in Finnish National Hockey League (SM-league) and Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) make junior players listen and pay attention to what Semir has to say. Currently, Semir is coaching the junior team of 2005 in Jokerit team from Helsinki.

“In my opinion, players of this age group get enough time on the ice. Boys spend 7-8 hours in guided training every week. However, there are still more than 100 hours per week outside of the training sessions, where boys need to make their own decisions about physical activity. Nowadays iPads, smart phones, and all gadgets tend to take an ever increasing proportion of that time. Yes, some are moving all day and have always been climbing the trees and such, but large proportion gets immersed to the world of computers and gaming. The guided training sessions are not sufficient to get enough movement.”

A new career as a personal trainer

After his player career, Semir studied to become Trainer4You personal trainer. Next big step is waiting around the corner: becoming an entrepreneur and offering personal training services to companies and individuals alike. He started using Fibion sitting and activity analysis to his junior players and plans to start using it also as a basis for his personal training services.

“Measured data is important to rationalize the change and to measure the outcomes. However, for example body composition, which is one typical measure used, is very sensitive thing especially for the young. You can’t decrease your fat percentage directly, but you should focus on things you can change right away. For example, physical activity is an easily understandable thing which can be directly affected by own actions. It is a healthy starting point for a change and to get the idea of the bigger picture.”

It’s very common that people want to lose 5-10 kilos right away.

“Fibion is an easy and trustworthy way to measure activity. I have a sporty background and I have done all kinds of tests but Fibion is easy to understand and very good tool for office workers and active people alike. The customer can easily understand what choices in daily life have an effect on sitting and activity.”

Semir focuses on the things that matter in the long run

In his personal training, Semir is always aiming for rational changes that can be maintained over time.

“It’s very common that people want to lose 5-10 kilos right away. They want results super-fast and do not realize that lifestyle change is needed. It is possible to lose weight fast but that is just not the right kind of lifestyle change that should be aimed in these situations. After the diet, you just continue with the old habits and weight gets back as fast as it did go away. I definitely start slowly from everyday activity and with changes that fit the daily life and schedules of the customer.”

Semir is surprised of his own Fibion results.

“Amount of sitting feels a lot! Three days I was at the arena from the morning to evening with the kids and activity accumulated quite nicely. During free days there was lots of sitting and slouching on the sofa. Normally, I train 5-6 days a week and when you count those in, the overall picture is good.”

On a day without coaching Semir had more sitting and less physical activity.

Semir had good Fibion points especially because of high health benefits from brisk activity time.

In Fibion goal report Semir tested how he could get higher Fibion points. A feasible option would be to reduce sitting by one hour and to increase brisk physical activity half an hour a day.

Some years ago, I was asked about my future plans. Without much of thinking I replied: “I want to make the world a better place where people don’t need to sit so much”. This spontaneous answer was the leading light to finish my PhD degree and forward to new business opportunities in health technology aiming at making life healthier - with less sitting. For my blog posts, I have used material from my book "Luomuliikunnan vallankumous" (engl. The revolution of everyday activity) (Fitra 2014).
